The Ins and Outs of Bee Hotel Management So you know that "save the bees" doesn't mean those dang invasive honeybees. You're on board to save native bees, but how? You've planted native plants and creating a bee hotel in your yard for native bees might seem like the right thing to do, but what if you're causing more damage than good? Come get details on how to properly provide accommodation to our small pollinator friends.

Abigail Lehner is an entomologist, science communicator, and STEMinist based at the University of California, Davis. She is pursuing her PhD, and studies how blue orchard bees are impacted by global change. In her spare time, you can find her reading books, trying local restaurants, crafting, or traveling with her husband.

Lexie Martin is an Entomology PhD Candidate at the University of California, Davis in Dr. Rachel Vannette’s Lab. She studies the impacts of environmentally acquired microbes on the health of bumblebees and blue orchard bees, but is broadly interested in bee gut microbiomes and bee-flower-microbe interactions. When she is not in the lab, she likes cooking, reading romance novels, and playing with her two (very loud and very naughty) pomeranians.

More Than Just Cute Baby Skunk Content! Hold on. If you’re not already following @wcaofsacramento on social media, you can just take a sec and do yourself a favor and go look at a bunch of adorable baby wildlife photos. But to be clear, the Wildlife Care Association is doing some serious work! What does it take to care for over 9,000 sick, orphaned, and injured animals annually? Come hear about what happens behind the scenes with the dedicated staff and volunteers who are rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife in our region.

Wildlife Care Association (WCA) is a Sacramento-based, nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization permitted by state and federal agencies to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife. Founded in 1975 and officially incorporated in 1978, WCA provides medical treatment and releases animals back into the wild once they’re ready. Partnering with public agencies and organizations that lack wildlife care resources, WCA plays a vital role in the community.

Sandra Foreman is the Director of Wildlife Care Association, where she oversees operations, animal care, and the overall needs of the facility and staff. A Sacramento State graduate, she pursued her passions in Environmental Studies and Animal Husbandry through an internship at a local wildlife center, where she discovered her love for wildlife rehabilitation and chose to pursue it as a lifelong career. Drawing on her experience in zoos and her training at a former rehabilitation center, Sandra provides compassionate, high-quality care to every animal that comes through WCA’s doors.

Paige Fandrei is the Communications and Outreach Coordinator at Wildlife Care Association, where she leads the organization’s communications, marketing, social media, and public outreach efforts. A photographer with a passion for visual storytelling, she works to increase awareness of local wildlife issues, inspire conservation, and highlight the incredible work happening behind the scenes to rescue, rehabilitate, and release thousands of wild animals each year.

And our Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is unlike any other place in California! All that, and it’s right down the road. Come hear some tales from a lifelong birder about a few of the characteristic birds you can find around this wonderfully unique, nearby ecoregion.

Aaron N.K. Haiman volunteered from a young age with bird research organizations before receiving a BS in Environmental Science from UC Berkeley as well as MS degrees in Avian Science and Animal Behavior from UC Davis. Aaron guides bird walks, mentors high school students in ecology and sustainability, leads a youth bird-a-thon team, and gives presentations on birds and habitat restoration. He works for the State of California and lives in West Sacramento.
